Agustín Pichot, en representación de los jugadores, integrará la Subcomisión de Rugby Profesional que acaba de ser aprobada por la UAR y que estará presidida por Ricardo García Fernández, consejero y titular también de la Subcomisión de Selecciones.

La flamante Subcomisión también la integrarán Alejandro Cubelli (URBA), Ricardo Paganini (Rosario y presidente de la Confederación Sudamericana) y Pablo Gabellieri (Córdoba).

Como los estatutos de la UAR aún no están aprobados por el conflicto Buenos Aires-Interior, este apéndice profesional de la UAR no tendrá carácter de comisión. Según el diario Olé, Hugo Porta también la iba a integrar, algo que finalmente no sucedió. El ex apertura y capitán de Los Pumas es actualmente el representante argentino ante el IRB, entidad con la que esta subcomisión deberá estar en contacto permanente.

La Subcomisión manejará el rugby profesional y será la que lleve adelante el plan para tratar de insertar a Los Pumas en una competencia internacional regular. Reportará a la mesa ejecutiva del Consejo de la UAR.

García Fernández ha sido el hombre más activo de la nueva conducción de la UAR. En este tiempo cumplió las funciones de CEO en las reuniones en el IRB y también actuó como manager en el último viaje de Los Pumas a Sudáfrica. Ahora suma un nuevo cargo que, en rigor, viene a complementar el rol que ejecutaba desde que asumió esta dirigencia.

La novedad -además de que el rugby profesional quedó a cargo de alguien que viene de un club como CUBA, que es el más férreo defensor del amateurismo- es la incorporación de Pichot a esta subcomisión.

Sin dudas, el ex capitán es quien más conoce cómo se mueve el tablero del rugby en la alta competencia y su figura es sumamente respetada y escuchada en los lugares donde se toman las decisiones de importancia. Su incorporación puede tomarse como un buen signo y también revela el compromiso de Pichot con el rugby argentino más allá de lo que hizo adentro de la cancha, aunque, seguramente, también llegarán voces en contrario.

La designación de un CEO, Guillermo Accame, y la creación de esta subcomisión formaron parte de la agenda que la UAR tuvo hace unos días con Mark Egan, el director de servicios del IRB que estuvo la semana pasada en la Argentina.

Egan llevará este panorama del rugby argentino a la reunión que el IRB tendrá el próximo jueves.

Otro dato de esta subcomisión es que Paganini y Pichot estuvieron juntos en el Mundial de 1995. Uno como entrenador y el otro como jugador.

También se determinó que el Sudamericano se jugará en Concepción, Chile, entre el 8 y 16 de noviembre, y que Los Pumas enfrentarán a Chile el 8 de ese mes por la segunda fecha del Sudamericano, que ya tuvo un triunfo argentino ante Uruguay por 43-8

Sucedió en Soweto, un suburbio de Johannesburgo salpicado por lágrimas de dolor e injusticia, un sitio que fue uno de los focos más vigorosos en los que se gestó la lucha contra el apartheid.

Allí pasaron ayer el día algunos jugadores argentinos (faltaron los que serán pasado mañana titulares) y el plantel completo de los Springboks. Conjuntamente, ambos equipos regaron sus conocimientos rugbísticos por un terreno que se hizo fértil al mundo ovalado tras la abolición de la política de segregación racial y gracias a la ayuda de un hombre blanco, quien por entonces era el director del liceo técnico Jabulani. En 1994, y después de mucho trabajo, el entusiasmo y la solidaridad levantaron lo que es hoy Soweto Rugby Club, un predio pequeño, con dos canchas, y en donde casi a diario disfrutan unos 600 chicos, todos negros, de los placeres de correr detrás de una pelota.

Fue una clínica de rugby sin distinciones, con niños blancos y negros, todos unidos por la riqueza del aprendizaje y de la amistad. Las figuras mundiales les enseñaron principios del rugby, una disciplina que de a poco gana popularidad en Soweto (South Western Township), un suburbio que convive al borde del hacinamiento, con más de 3.500.000 habitantes y que, según los locales, "es un país dentro de Sudáfrica".

En el centro de la cancha principal, John Allan, un ex Springbok, dirigía los ejercicios mediante un altavoz. Cada jugador tenía a su cargo un grupo de diez chicos a los que les debía enseñar y luego exponer en público todo lo aprendido. Los pequeños que estuvieron bajo las órdenes de Esteban Lozada y el sudafricano Victor Matfield se ganaron la mayoría de los aplausos. Marcos Ayerza, pese a su excelente inglés, jamás pudo hacerse entender entre los niños, aunque la práctica le resultó agradable. "Es nuestro hogar. Crecimos tanto en los últimos años que queremos fundar más clubes alrededor de Soweto, para que todos tengamos nuestro lugar. La visita de los Pumas y la de Hugo Porta es importante y les enseña a los chicos, todos ellos de situación desfavorable, a incentivarlos a que si se esfuerzan algún día podrán llegar a ser como ellos", comentó Ndebele.

Un vaho de dulzura y serenidad se advertía en el atardecer. Los últimos rayos caían sesgados e iluminaban a un lugar que se abrió a la vida por el camino de la paz. El Consejo Directivo de la Unión Argentina de Rugby en su última reunión del 28.12.07, dispuso el nombramiento del Sr. Hugo Porta en reemplazo del Sr. Carlos Tozzi como representante del rugby argentino ante la International Rugby Board.

Cumpliendo un viejo anhelo del rugby argentino en todo de acuerdo con lo pautado en Febrero de 2006 con las más altas autoridades de la entidad internacional y con el mismo Sr. Tozzi, quien deja así su cargo luego de una larga trayectoria de 17 años en IRB.

“Mi función será representar al rugby argentino, algo que ya hice dentro de la cancha y ahora me tocará hacerlo desde la dirigencia. Yo hasta ahora no era el representante de la Argentina, sino el Presidente de la Confederación Sudamericana de Rugby.”
