Porfirio Carreras ingresa a su despacho en la UAR y antes de sentarse lanza un “Uff, hoy un fue un día terrible”. No se refiere precisamente al caos de vehículos y protestas varias que transforman, como siempre, al centro porteño en un caos. No se le piden datos, pero su cara refleja el cansancio. “¿Mi trabajo? Buena pregunta…”, contesta cuando se lo consulta por cómo hace para compatibilizar su profesión -y sustento económico- de abogado con su decisión -amateur- de estar al frente de la entidad que rige al rugby argentino. Cuenta que llega todos los días a la UAR a las 12 del mediodía y que se marcha cuando la calle Rivadavia, a cuadras del Obelisco, es un desierto sólo dibujado con el paso de los cartoneros o de chicos desamparados que buscan una moneda o algo de comida.

Carreras se desploma sobre su sillón y enfrente quedamos Guillermo Accame y quien esto escribe. Apoyado contra una pared, el jefe de prensa de la UAR, Rafael Laría, que después nos dará una mano con las fotos. El reportaje solicitado por periodismo-rugby arranca sin un minuto de retraso y se extiende por casi dos horas. Sin interrupción alguna. Ni siquiera puede ingresar a la oficina la secretaria que parece que trae algo importante. Y, afuera, otros dirigentes tendrán que esperar al presidente para decidir temas y firmar papeles. Porfirio sólo se relaja cuando antes de entrar de lleno en el reporrtaje, habla de Alumni, “mi segunda casa, adonde voy y encuentro el cable a tierra”. Después, y esta es apenas una impresión, demuestra que tiene ganas de hablar y, también, -y sigue siendo una impresión- que todo lo que dirá inevitablemente arrojará polémicas. Ya se verá.

- ¿Cuáles son hoy los planes a corto plazo de la UAR?

- Es difícil hablar de cortos plazos porque el día a día te va imponiendo temas todo el tiempo. Creo que en este poco tiempo (esta conducción asumió el 22 de febrero) hemos hecho bastante: elaboramos un Plan Estratégico que fue aceptado por el IRB, logramos destrabar los fondos del Board, tuvimos varias reuniones, avanzamos en el objetivo de insertar a Los Pumas en una competencia internacional, creamos una subcomisión de rugby profesional, contratamos a un gerente general. Te diría que ahora tenemos que seguir con lo establecido en el Plan Estratégico.

- ¿Y cómo sigue?

- Bueno, ahora nos estamos por mudar (ver post Presentación) y eso nos permitirá estar en unas oficinas más cómodas y mejor equipadas que estas. En cuanto a los objetivos del Plan Estratégico, lo que viene es avanzar lo antes posible con los Centros de Alto Rendimiento y Desarrollo, una tarea para la cual es clave el trabajo de él (y señala a Accame). Estamos buscando los lugares y las condiciones, pero te repito, no se puede hablar de un tema solo. Son muchos los que hay resolver en el día.

- ¿Qué características tienen que poseer los lugares que están buscando?

- Ante todo, que tengan espacio para una cancha. También tienen que estar a nombre de la UAR, porque eso es lo que nos obliga el IRB en el reparto de los fondos que nos fueron asignados. Ya tenemos en vista un par de lugares, al menos en el más grande, que será en Buenos Aires.

- ¿Se puede saber dónde?

- No, es una cuestión confidencial y no te la podemos decir (NdR: el diario Olé publicó el domingo que podría ser en Nordelta).

- Se mencionó que buscan algo parecido al lugar que tiene la AFA en Ezeiza.

- Tampoco. Sí quizá la idea a largo plazo es que en este Centro también funcionen las oficinas de la UAR. Pero muy a largo plazo.

- ¿Qué conclusiones se sacaron de la última visita de los enviados del IRB?

- Ellos ven que estamos haciendo lo que se pactó, aunque les gustaría que fuesemos más rápido. Nosotros tratamos de explicarles las dificultades que no sólo tiene el rugby argentino, sino el país. Esto no se puede cambiar de un día para el otro y va a llevar tiempo. Entendien, pero también te meten presión.

Habla Accame: “Nos dijeron algo muy claro: “Está bien, si pueden, vayan más rápido, pero siempre fíjense quiénes vienen detrás: si están solos o compañados“. Para ellos eso es fundamental”.

- ¿Y quién viene atrás en todo este proceso de cambio?

- Y… Ahí está el tema (retoma Carreras). Yo soy conciente que no tengo, bah, no yo, sino esta conducción, todo el apoyo necesario. Que me miran con desconfianza cada paso que doy. La lucha interna que hubo antes de las elecciones fue muy dura y aún no se zanjó. El Interior siento que no me tiene toda la confianza y también hay que ver cómo responden los clubes de Buenos Aires con lo que pretendemos hacer. El otro día tuve una reunión con todos los presidentes, que son mis amigos, pero no siento que hay una voluntad absoluta para instrumentar los cambios que nos obligan estos tiempos.

- Concretamente, ¿cuáles son los cambios a los que te referís? Supongo que tienen que ver con el paso concreto al profesionalismo.

- Sí, sobre todo. Nosotros estamos dispuestos de una buena vez a no seguir como antes. Y en eso no hay vuelta. Que no me vengan a decir a mi que esta conducción es la va a introducir el profesionalismo en la Argentina. Esto ya fue hace muchos años desde el día que se le permitió a un jugador profesional ponerse la camiseta de Los Pumas. El tema es que lo que pasó en el Mundial abrió un nuevo escenario que nos da una enorme posibilidad de crecer, pero haciendo las cosas como se deben y no a medias, como hasta ahora. Eso no va más.

- ¿Entonces?

- El rugby argentino tiene dos cosas que relucen. Una, la más visible, la que más genera no sólo económicamente, es el seleccionado. La otra, la que no tiene ningún otro país del mundo, que es única y que además es nuestro orgullo, son los clubes. Hay que apuntar a solventar las dos sin que una se coma a la otra.

- ¿Y cómo se hace?

- Ya le hicimos entender al IRB que acá es imposible una competencia profesional. Que no va con nuestra cultura y, además, porque vimos que eso, por ejemplo en Escocia, tuvo un muy mal resultado. Ellos formaron dos equipos profesionales regionales que se terminaron gastando todo el dinero para el resto del rugby sin ningún resultado. Y ahí está Escocia, que sólo tiene poder porque está en el Reino Unido. Nosotros necesitamos generar recursos con Los Pumas para solventar no sólo al profesionalismo, sino a los clubes.

- Insisto. ¿Cuál es el plan, entonces?

- En principio, frenar el éxodo de jugadores a Europa. Captarlos aquí para que tengan una preparación adecuada a la alta competencia e ir armando uno o dos equipos que con el tiempo puedan encontrar una competencia de importancia, no en Europa, porque allá no nos quieren y porque el IRB nos situó en el Sur, sino a nivel Panamericano, en el Pacífico o en el Sur, probablemente en el Súper Rugby (hoy el Súper 14). Pero no como ahora, con el plan de viaticados. Algo acorde a lo que exige hoy el rugby profesional.

- ¿Esos jugadores actuarían en sus clubes?

- No. Y ahí está la cuestión que planteé antes. Los clubes tendrán que aceptar que iremos y les sacaremos a los jugadores que estén para la alta competencia. Que en vez de que se los lleven a Europa, se queden acá.

- En verdad suena difícil de aceptar. ¿Y con los que ya están en Europa, que son la mayoría de los titulares en Los Pumas?

- La idea es repatriarlos, porque no podemos seguir aspirando a jugar el Tres Naciones si no disponemos de los jugadores. Ya se vio en la ventana de junio y en el test con los Springboks. Es un plan hacia el 2012, que creo que es cuando estaremos en condiciones de entrar al Tres Naciones.

- ¿Y cómo se hace para decirle a un jugador que gana un muy buen sueldo en Europa que se vuelva a la Argentina?

- Bueno, ya lo hablamos con los jugadores. Si no tenemos el apoyo de ellos en esto, no podemos seguir avanzando. Aedmás, hay que tener en cuenta cómo está hoy el mercado, con un Norte muy poderoso y un Sur no tanto. Que Europa esté contratando a neocelandeses, sudafricanos, australianos, fijianos y samoanos para que jueguen en sus clubes en algún momento va a significar que nuestros jugadores ya no tengan tanto lugar en Europa.

- ¿Y de cuánto dinero se habla? ¿Cuánto cuesta tener un plantel estable, con todos, acá en la Argentina?

- Entre 10 y 15 millones de dólares.

- Pero esa plata en la Argentina es imposible, sobre todo porque el IRB ya aclaró que los fondos que destina no son para pagarle a los jugadores.

- Los fondos saldrían de jugar el Tres Naciones. Cada Unión del Sanzar recibe anualmente del Tres Naciones dividendos por 100 millones de dólares. Obviamente, a la Argentina no le van a dar esa cifra, pero con 30 millones me doy por contento.

- Es un escenario complicado desde mi punto de vista, pero vuelvo a lo que planteaste antes: ¿Cómo avanzar con todo esto cuando ni siquiera se pudieron aprobar los nuevos estatutos que entre otras cosas incluyen este proceso hacia el profesionalismo?

- Pero los estatutos no se aprobaron por otra cuestión, aunque yo sigo aspirando a que ese tema se solucione.

- Es por la puja Buenos Aires-Interior. A propósito, ¿se avanzó algo en estos meses?

- No, hasta donde yo sé. Yo al Interior ya le dije que tendrá mucha participación con los Centros de Alto Rendimiento y Desarrollo, que no habrá postergación a sus intereses, pero como te dije antes, percibo que no me tienen todavía confianza. Pero no apuntemos sólo al Interior. Buenos Aires también debe entender que necesitamos que, por ejemplo, atienda a algunas cuestiones como la competencia interna y que modificar la estructura de su campeonato es indispensable para organizar un Nacional de Clubes en serio.

- Después de contar todo este plan, ¿cuál es tu verdadera percepción?

Agustín Pichot, en representación de los jugadores, integrará la Subcomisión de Rugby Profesional que acaba de ser aprobada por la UAR y que estará presidida por Ricardo García Fernández, consejero y titular también de la Subcomisión de Selecciones.

La flamante Subcomisión también la integrarán Alejandro Cubelli (URBA), Ricardo Paganini (Rosario y presidente de la Confederación Sudamericana) y Pablo Gabellieri (Córdoba).

Como los estatutos de la UAR aún no están aprobados por el conflicto Buenos Aires-Interior, este apéndice profesional de la UAR no tendrá carácter de comisión. Según el diario Olé, Hugo Porta también la iba a integrar, algo que finalmente no sucedió. El ex apertura y capitán de Los Pumas es actualmente el representante argentino ante el IRB, entidad con la que esta subcomisión deberá estar en contacto permanente.

La Subcomisión manejará el rugby profesional y será la que lleve adelante el plan para tratar de insertar a Los Pumas en una competencia internacional regular. Reportará a la mesa ejecutiva del Consejo de la UAR.

García Fernández ha sido el hombre más activo de la nueva conducción de la UAR. En este tiempo cumplió las funciones de CEO en las reuniones en el IRB y también actuó como manager en el último viaje de Los Pumas a Sudáfrica. Ahora suma un nuevo cargo que, en rigor, viene a complementar el rol que ejecutaba desde que asumió esta dirigencia.

La novedad -además de que el rugby profesional quedó a cargo de alguien que viene de un club como CUBA, que es el más férreo defensor del amateurismo- es la incorporación de Pichot a esta subcomisión.

Sin dudas, el ex capitán es quien más conoce cómo se mueve el tablero del rugby en la alta competencia y su figura es sumamente respetada y escuchada en los lugares donde se toman las decisiones de importancia. Su incorporación puede tomarse como un buen signo y también revela el compromiso de Pichot con el rugby argentino más allá de lo que hizo adentro de la cancha, aunque, seguramente, también llegarán voces en contrario.

La designación de un CEO, Guillermo Accame, y la creación de esta subcomisión formaron parte de la agenda que la UAR tuvo hace unos días con Mark Egan, el director de servicios del IRB que estuvo la semana pasada en la Argentina.

Egan llevará este panorama del rugby argentino a la reunión que el IRB tendrá el próximo jueves.

Otro dato de esta subcomisión es que Paganini y Pichot estuvieron juntos en el Mundial de 1995. Uno como entrenador y el otro como jugador.

También se determinó que el Sudamericano se jugará en Concepción, Chile, entre el 8 y 16 de noviembre, y que Los Pumas enfrentarán a Chile el 8 de ese mes por la segunda fecha del Sudamericano, que ya tuvo un triunfo argentino ante Uruguay por 43-8

Es un momento en el que hay que actuar, también bajo esas premisas. Se acaba de vivir una película que se creía que estaba guardada en un archivo bajo doble candado. Pero a sólo 10 meses de la histórica actuación en Francia, Los Pumas sufrieron en Johannesburgo una de las derrotas más duras de su historia. Es preciso, a modo de introducción en esto que pretende ser un análisis, rescatar dos verdades: Los Pumas no son hoy el tercer equipo del mundo y quizá nunca más lo vuelvan a ser, y tampoco existe, en condiciones normales, una diferencia de 54 puntos con los sudafricanos. Sí está claro, una vez más, que en esta situación ya no se arriesga sólo el prestigio ganado por los jugadores, sino que sus propios físicos. Estos no son partidos de alto riesgo únicamente por el resultado.

En los días previos al test de ayer revisamos muchos choques en la historia Pumas-Springboks, pero no se citó uno disputado el 4 de diciembre del 2004, en Vélez. En aquella tarde calurosa, los argentinos la pasaron realmente mal y perdieron por 39-7, que hasta la de Johannesburgo era la goleada más abultada. Pero si se hace memoria, ese día el resultado no fue más catatrófico y los tries se frenaron en cinco y no llegaron a más de nueve simplemente porque los Boks bajaron los decibeles ya que esa misma noche iniciaban sus vacaciones. Recuerdo haber temido tanto por la salud de Gonzalo Tiesi (debutó con 18 años), de Alberto Vernet Basualdo, de Manuel Carizza y de Eusebio Guiñazú, entre otros, como ayer lo sentí cuando ingresaron Benjamín Urdapilleta y Alfredo Lalanne, a quien en la única pelota que tocó casi le vuelan la cabeza.

Ese partido se jugó en iguales condiciones que el de ayer. Fuera de lo que decide el IRB, por lo cual los clubes europeos tuvieron el vía libre para no ceder a sus jugadores. Agustín Pichot y Juan Martín Hernández estuvieron porque llegaron a un acuerdo personal con el Stade Francais, pero el plantel de 22 jugadores tenia a 17 amateurs y faltaron nueve titulares indiscutibles. Recurrí al archivo y me encontré escribiendo esto el final de esa nota: “los dirigentes argentinos deberán revisar cómo afrontan de ahora en más el mapa que ofrece el mundo ovalado. Enfrentamientos con tanta diferencia no le sirven de nada a estos jugadores amateurs que reciben los golpes de otros que juegan por dinero. Tampoco al crecimiento del rugby”.

Aquello fue hace menos de cuatro años y en el medio estuvo el Mundial. Por eso, sigue siendo cada vez más evidente que de la única manera que Los Pumas pueden afrontar partidos, especialmente con las potencias del Sur, es si se preparan física, mental y técnicamente como lo hicieron para Francia 2007. Y hoy por hoy eso es imposible. Es tanto el crecimiento que se va generando en el resto, que el régimen de viaticados es un tema antiguo y no existe ya un jugador del rugby doméstico que pueda competir mano a mano en el alto nivel. Miremos todo: no sólo les pasó a Los Pumas ayer; el M20 sufrió las diferencias abismales en el Mundial de Gales y el M18 las acaba de sentir con los ingleses. Las distancias son muy grandes y se agigantan día a día.

Es verdad que nadie quería jugar este partido salvo los dirigentes, pero hay que convenir que era muy dificil decirles que no a los únicos que hacen algo para la inserción del rugby argentino en el plano profesional. Sudáfrica podría haber elegido para la ocasión a otra selección o a un Barbarianas, pero apuntó a la Argentina. Y también era complicado rechazar un test de esta magnitud en el medio del reclamo por más competencia. Ese escenario mundial es sumamente complicado por dos razones harto sabidas: 1) Lo ideal sería tener una competencia regular en Europa, donde juegan todos los titulares de Los Pumas. Pero ahí, apoyados por el IRB que ubicó a la Argentina en el Sur -donde está situada, por otra parte-, no quieren saber nada con la idea; 2) Competir en el Sur, con las variantes del Súper 14 y el Tres Naciones. También hoy por hoy es imposible. No existe chance que desde Nueva Zelanda, Australia o Audáfrica contraten para sus equipos a jugadores argentinos ni tampoco que la UAR tenga a disposición a todos sus jugadores para no depender de lo que decidan los clubes de afuera.

Desde la UAR afirman, con buenas intenciones, que lo del Tres Naciones es un hecho. Sin embargo, la realidad demuestra que cada vez se está más lejos. Lo dijo el mismo Pichot, quien desinteresadamente y hasta postergando sus vacaciones, fue a la reunión de Wellington a dar una mano. Los intereses económicos aumentan día a día y los conflictos se van sucediendo. Por eso hay que ser inteligentes y no demorar más las decisiones que se deben tomar si es que se quiere en serio que Los Pumas puedan salir a la cancha en condiciones de igualdad con los grandes.

Tanto buscó Argentina y tanto reconocimiento cosechó en el ámbito internacional que, al fin, Los Pumas fueron invitados a jugar el Tres Naciones desde el 2012. Pero, del dicho al hecho... Lógicamente, la Sanzar (Nueva Zelanda, Australia y Sudáfrica) pide que la Selección, mucho más taquillera desde el bronce mundialista, se presente con lo mejor, con los Hernández, Corleto, Albacete, Contepomi, la gran base que se desempeña en Europa. Pero, ¿cómo hacer para que ellos dejen sus clubes? ¿Decirles "vengan a jugar al país"? ¿Y la plata que cobran? Rugby profesional en la Argentina, imposible. ¿Entonces?

Entonces hay una idea. Que esos Pumas, como equipo, participen en torneos internacionales y, luego, disputen el Tres Naciones, que en realidad sería un Cinco Naciones (los tres de siempre, Los Pumas y un seleccionado del Pacífico que saldría de una clasificación). Claro que hay que conseguir el dinero como para que los jugadores (en Europa reciben 150.000 euros de promedio por temporada) acepten. Ese es otro tema -no menor- a resolver. El grupo que actúa en el país jugará competencias menores como la Churchill Cup.

La UAR tiene dos planes. El "1" es mandar el equipo al Super Rugby (actual Super 14), un certamen que se juega entre seleccionados provinciales de las tres potencias, al que buscan expandir y hacerlo más atractivo, como también al Tres Naciones. El problema es dónde afincar a Los Pumas. Nueva Zelanda y Australia no quieren que las fechas incluyan partidos en la Argentina. Una posibilidad es que los jugadores hagan base en Sudáfrica y que el torneo se divida en zonas: una para Australia y Nueva Zelanda y la otra en la tierra de Mandela. Ricardo García Fernández, dirigente de la UAR que viaja en la primera semana de julio a Nueva Zelanda, comentó que es "la más lógica y viable".

Claro que no tendría tanto apoyo de los jugadores, que pretenden permaneces en Europa. Por eso está el plan "2": que el equipo se sume a la Liga Celta (juegan galeses, irlandeses y escoceses), lo cual, según Richichi, "es políticamente más complicado". ¿Por qué lo prefieren los players? Así se haría base en Europa (¿España?), donde residen. Las cuestiones logísticas (dónde entrenar, cuándo juntarse) también son temas a resolver.

Originalmente, Los Pumas querían ir al Seis Naciones, con lo cual podrían seguir jugando en sus clubes de Europa, ya que la actividad local se interrumpe. Harían base en, por ejemplo, España durante un par de meses y listo. Pero desde el torneo se negaron. Así, quedó el Tres Naciones, pero con dificultades por cuestiones económicas, logísticas y organizativas a resolver... En la sede de la Unión de Rugby de Cuyo se presentó el inglés Les Cusworth, Director de Rugby de la Unión Argentina de Rugby para anunciar la creación del Centro de Alto Rendimiento y Desarrollo (CEDARD).

Cusworth es un especialista en el análisis de videos de los partidos de rugby, colaboró mucho con Los Pumas en el último mundial realizado en Francia, la finalidad de este centro es perfeccionar la infraestructura y la formación de los jugadores, principalmente en las provincias.

“Habrá cinco centros regionales en Argentina, estos se encontrarán en Buenos Aires, Rosario, Tucumán, Córdoba y Mendoza. El primer paso es encontrar un Director para el Centro, será designado mediante una selección, los interesados presentarán sus currículum, se harán anuncios en Mendoza y en la web de la UAR, en los próximos tres meses tenemos que tenerlo designado. Será abierto y transparente. Se necesitará a gente que colabore, que proteja a los clubes, al espíritu amateur.” comentó

Para graficar uno de los mayores problemas que afronta actualmente el rugby en su terreno profesional, Bernard Lapasset utilizó como ejemplo la finalísima de la Champions League que hoy disputarán en Moscú el Manchester United y el Chelsea: “Dos equipos inglesen casi sin jugadores ingleses”. Desde aquí se puede agregar que ambos reúnen a futbolistas de 21 países distintos y que ni siquiera son ingleses sus directores técnicos ni sus dueños, aunque también figuran entre los cuatro clubes de más ganancias en el mundo, a un promedio de 300 millones de euros por temporada.

Lapasset habló de la necesidad de “preservar la identidad europea”. Lo hizo ante los dirigentes argentinos y también en la conferencia de prensa. Y anunció que en los próximos meses habrá una reunión cumbre entre los presidentes de las federaciones europeas de los cuatro deportes de conjunto más importantes: el fútbol (representado por el titular de la UEFA, otro francés, Michael Platini), el rugby, el básquetbol y el voleibol. “Estamos ante un serio problemas”, agregó.

Francia es quizá el país que más sufre con esta globalización del rugby. Quedó demostrado en el último Mundial. Hoy por hoy, los titulares de los clubes son mayoritariamente extranjeros y desde allá se intuye que eso no permite la aparición de nuevas figuras. Por ejemplo, ¿hace cuánto que Francia no saca primeras líneas o parejas de medios de gran nivel?

Aunque estemos lejos en todo sentido de Europa, el tema toca sensiblemente a la Argentina, cuyos jugadores de calidad de selección actúan todos en ese Continente. ¿Qué pasará si allá deciden, como ya está sucediendo en otros ámbitos, cerrar las fronteras?

Ese aspecto, agregado al hecho de que Los Pumas deberán competir en un futuro en el Hemisferio Sur, tornan de modo casi indispensable que se acelere -sin prisa- el proceso de contratar a los jugadores para que dependan de la Unión Argentina de Rugby (UAR). Y por ahí hay que leer, sobre todo, la monumental inyección económica de 3 millones y medio de libras esterlinas que este país recibirá después del Mundial del 2011 en Nueva Zelanda. Lapasset aclaró que ese dinero “no es para pagarle a los jugadores”, pero también anunció que a partir de allí se acabarán las giras y que las competencias quedarán reducidas a los dos Hemisferios.

Los dirigentes argentinos, que tienen por delante una tarea que no es para nada sencilla, deberán atender también este frente que sucede a 10 mil kilómetros de distancia pero que pronto se sentirá como en casa.

Por tratarse de una disciplina colectiva y que después del último Mundial se ha transformado en un fenómeno económico más que interesante para los popes del COI, la ovalada corre con cierta ventaja. La intención es llegar a los Juegos de Londres 2012, aunque es probable que la inclusión recién se dé en el 2016.

“Tenemos para ofrecer dos días de juego con 20 equipos en la modalidad de Seven, con la particularidad que pueden sumar medallas países como Fiji, Samoa, Argentina o Uruguay”, explicó Lapasset.

Habrá una comisión que antes de la reunión en Copenhague le brindará una “sugerencia” al titular del COI, el belga Jacques Rogge, quien jugó al rugby y hasta integró el seleccionado de su país. Rogge fue un invitado VIP al último Mundial en Francia, y se mostró complacido por la repercusión del rugby y sus estadios repletos, aunque fue crítico con el nivel de juego.

La aventura del rugby en los Juegos no fue fructífera. Sólo participó en cuatro ediciones y nunca con más de tres selecciones. La última, en París, concluyó con un escándalo y ese determinó su adiós.

El mentor de los Juegos de la Era Moderna, el barón Pierre de Coubertin, fue un cultor del rugby y el año pasado fue incluído en el Hall de la Fama por el IRB.

Al menos por las palabras y por las actitudes, la visita de Bernard Lapasset, que concluyó hoy, puede significar un antes y un después en el rugby argentino. El International Rugby Board (IRB) manifestó su fuerte apoyo a este país, ratificándolo como miembro del Tier 1, aceptando el Plan Estratégico diseñado por la UAR, comprendiendo la cultura rugbística doméstica y destinando de aquí al 2012 una inyección económica de 7.900.000 libras esterlinas (alrededor del doble en dólares), una cifra prácticamente inédita para el deporte de estas tierras.

Lapasset, en la conferencia de prensa que brindó esta mañana en el Hotel Panamericano, aclaró también que el IRB no le pondrá condiciones a la UAR, aunque fue enfático al remarcar que el Plan Estratégico se debe cumplir. Más claro aún: pidió “accionar y unidad”. Esto último fue tomado por el titular de la UAR, Porfirio Carreras, quien sentenció que confía en una solución “rápida” a las divisiones que hoy existen en la dirigencia y que, entre otras cosas, no permitieron la aprobación de los nuevos estatutos, que contienen las estructuras profesionales que requiere el máximo organismo de la ovalada.

El oxígeno económico que tendrá la Argentina -”para que ya no esté más asilada del mundo”, según el propio Lapasset- incluye cuatro etapas. La primera, de 150 mil libras esterlinas que estarán destinadas exclusivamente a la función social que los clubes argentinos tienen el rugby. La segunda, de 250 mil de la misma moneda, a la creación de los Centros de Desarrollo y Alto Rendimiento, ubicados en Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza, Tucumán y Rosario. Conviene detenerse aquí. Es que Carreras explicó que esos Centros no estarán destinados exclusivamente a la alta competencia, sino también para nutrir a los clubes. “Esa es la parte que le hicimos entender al IRB; que nuestra realidad no es la misma que la del resto”, sostuvo. Lapasset confirmó esa visión ante la prensa.

La tercera consistirá en 3 millones de libras esterlinas, a un millón por año desde el 2009 hasta el 2011, exclusivamente para la preparación de los seleccionados. Y la cuarta, la más novedosa, otros 3 millones y medio de libras que la Argentina, por su condición de miembro del Tier 1, recibirá en el 2012, luego del Mundial de Nueva Zelanda. Aclaración rápida del francés: “Esa plata no es para pagarle a los jugadores”.

Lapasset explicó que la situación de la Argentina en ese grupo de elite no dependerá de los resultados futuros -puso como ejemplos a Gales e Irlanda, que continúan allí pese a haber sido eliminados en la primera rueda del último Mundial-, sino de cómo la UAR lleve adelante este plan.

“La IRB no puede establecer un plan único para todos los países. En estos días en la Argentina estuve comprobando la cultura de los clubes de aquí, que es única en el mundo. Por eso, aceptamos lo que nos plantea la UAR. Pero también queremos demostrarle al mundo que el profesionalismo puede convivir con el amateurismo, sin destruirlo. Sabemos de las preocupaciones, y las compartimos, pero el rugby debe mantener ante todo sus valores para seguir en el camino de ser uno de los espectáculos deportivos más importantes que existen hoy”, afirmó el francés.

En cuanto a una probable competencia internacional anual para Los Pumas, Lapasset no sólo dijo que deberá ser en el Sur, sino que lanzó una elíptica crítica a los integrantes del Sanzar (Australia, Nueva Zelanda y Sudáfrica), manifestando que deben abrir el espectro “para que no exista una sola forma de juego”. No sólo incluyó a la Argentina en el proyecto, sino a Japón. Puso el ejemplo de Europa y de cómo se fue ampliando el ahora Seis Naciones. En ese sentido, informó que en abril del año próximo habrá una reunion decisiva del Sanzar.

Lapasset también especificó que en el Sur deben realizarse torneos regionales -”no necesariamente profesionales”- con la intervención de equipos argentinos, más Uruguay y Chile.

“Trazamos un plan a diez años, y el IRB está firme junto a la UAR”, concluyó Lapasset antes de abandonar el país en este viaje intenso de cuatro días. El rugby argentino está ante una oportunidad extraordinaria, de esas que aparecen una vez en la vida. Los jugadores ya hicieron su parte. Ahora, le toca a los dirigentes.

La noche empezaba su función y el insólito calor de mediados de mayo ahora es una suave brisa típica de verano. Bernard Lapasset, el francés que preside el International Rugby Board (IRB), hacía su última escala de un día que arrancó bien temprano, cuando lo pasaron a buscar a las 9 de la mañana por un elegante hotel de Puerto Madero. El escenario, Virreyes Rugby Club, enclavado en el partido de San Fernando, a cuadras de la Panamericana y el Camino del Buen Ayre. Los reflectores alcanzan para iluminar sólo la cancha 1, recientemente sembrada y con un verde envidiable. Las otras dos, en penumbras, se van poblando de los juveniles que llegan para el entrenamiento de los jueves. Con los infantiles, suman unos 600. Se respira rugby.

Lapasset, al igual que en la recorrida que incluyó a los clubes San Martín, Belgrano, CASI y SIC, luce un rostro que denosta asombro por el escenario con el que se topa. Lo reciben Marcos Julianes y Carlos Ramallo, hombres del CASI y del SIC, que hace seis años iniciaron este proyecto con chicos que no sabían lo que era una ovalada. En la cancha que lleva su nombre, Rodolfo O’Reilly, otro símbolo de Virreyes, lo espera para acompañarlo en el primer vistazo. El francés lo abraza emocionado. Lo recuerda de cuando Michingo era entrenador de Los Pumas: “Hace como 15 años que no te veo”.

Inmediatamente, Lapasset es invitado al primer piso de la construcción que todavía está en ciernes. En la sala armada especialmente para que los chicos estudien mientras no juegan al rugby, al francés lo esperan unas facturas y unas gaseosas que no aceptará “porque vengo de comer en todos lados”.

Se inicia una breve e intensa charla, con Porfirio Carreras, el presidente de la UAR, como principal testigo. Julianes es enfático: “Este es un club pobre, pero así es la mayoría de los clubes de la Argentina. Nosotros queremos manifestarle nuestra preocupación porque no queremos que el profesionalismo termine matando a nuestros clubes. Y observamos que ese peligro existe”. Lapasset coincide al principio: “Nosotros también estamos preocupados y estamos trabajando para que se preserven los valores del rugby. Sabemos de los peligros que puede llevar el profesionalismo en un deporte como el nuestro. Pero quiero decir que la Copa del Mundo fue un ejemplo. Millones de personas han visto a jugadores con sus rostros limpios, jugando con corrección, sin un solo incidente dentro y fuera de las canchas. Eso también está en el rugby profesional”.

O’Reilly le explica que la realidad argentina es distinta a la de otros países. Que aquí existe una cultura muy fuerte de clubes y que el rugby “no es sólo saltar, empujar y correr; así lo entendemos nosotros”. Y sigue: “En la Argentina este es un deporte en el cual todos siempre pusimos sin llevarnos nada. Y Porfirio es un ejemplo de eso”.

El intercambio es breve pero intenso. Lapasset escucha atentamente. Antes, en díalogo con este periodista, sentenció que “Nosotros estamos comprendiendo que la realidad de todos los países no es la misma, y que Argentina tiene que mantener ese espíritu que se notó en el Mundial, donde Los Pumas han sido un ejemplo para todos”.

Carreras asiente en otro díalogo con el mismo interlocutor: “Creo que han entendido que nuestra esencia está en los clubes y que lo que generen Los Pumas también tiene que ser invertido en ellos”.

Ese es el debate que se viene. Qué hacer con los millones de dólares que ahora sí vendran. Cómo y de qué modo se construye la pirámide. Si de arriba para abajo, con resultados inmediatos y futuro incierto, o a la inversa, con un proyecto que llevará mucho tiempo pero que el rugby argentino sabe de qué se trata porque tiene la base. Es una tarea que debe involucrar a todos y no sólo a esta dirigencia. Y en medio de tantos números vale recalcar por ahora que Carreras, que es el presidente de la UAR, sigue hablando de la importancia de los clubes.

En su periplo, Lapasset fue recibido por distintos Pumas. En San Martín, por Jorge Dartiguelongue; en Belgrano, por Alejandro Cubelli; en el CASI, por Alejandro Travaglini y Gonzalo Beccar Varela, y en el SIC, por Diego Cash, Gonzalo Longo y José Cilley.

“Cuando vio nuestro club dijo que era fantástico”, contó Dartiguelongue, Puma del 65. El francés quedó impactado por la sede de Belgrano de Virrey del Pino, donde almorzó con dirigentes de los cuatro clubes fundadores de la UAR. También se maravilló por la edificación del CASI, mientras que en el SIC no sólo hizo escala en el club, sino que fue al Anexo, acompañado además por el ex presidente de la UAR, Emilio Perasso.

A la noche, Lapasset tuvo distracción. Cena a la Argentina y espectáculo de tango.

Mañana, a las 10.30, en el Hotel Panamericano, dará una conferencia de prensa. A la tarde volverá a Europa. Allí transmitirá sus experiencias en un país que vive el rugby de una manera que quizá no entre en las estructuras ni en los conceptos de quienes hoy manejan el negocio de la ovalada. Pero esa es otra historia.

Después de rectificar el comunicado que había emitido el International Rugby Board y de explicarle en persona a las máximas autoridades de la Unión Argentina de Rugby (UAR) que la inyección económica no dependerá de la aprobación de los estatutos, el francés Bernard Lapasset tuvo hoy, en su segundo día de visita por el país, una extensa reunión con la dirigencia argentina que, según testigos consultados, arrojó sensaciones encontradas.

Lapasset estuvo hoy alrededor de siete horas en la sede que la UAR tiene en la calle Rivadavia y allí, después de escuchar el plan de desarrollo que piensa implemantar la Argentina, brindó una amplia disertación ante los presidentes de todas las Uniones y del Consejo de la UAR. El francés, de acuerdo a fuentes consultadas por este blog, alertó en un momento de ciertas dificultades de importancia que se están viviendo con el profesionalismo en este deporte, aunque también aclaró que la mayor parte del dinero que aportará el IRB a este país será destinado exclusivamente a la alta competencia.

El presidente del International Rugby Board (IRB), el francés Bernard Lapasset, ya está en la Argentina y tendrá pronta acción: en cuestión de horas sostendrá la primera reunión con el Consejo de la UAR y también se verá las caras con los dirigentes del Comité Olímpico Argentino (COA).

En la UAR esperaban con ansiedad y cierta preocupación la llegada de Lapasset, ya que en un comunicado difundido justo ayer por el IRB, se especifica que la millonaria inyección económica arribará a estas tierras “una vez que (la UAR) finalice su reestructuración gubernamental y organizativa”. O sea, cuando estén listos los estatutos que aún no se aprobaron.

En declaraciones al diario La Nación de hoy, Porfirio Carreras, presidente de la UAR, sostuvo: “La reforma de nuestro estatuto no tiene nada que ver con el aporte de fondos de la IRB. Sería mejor modificarlos para cumplir con algunos requisitos solicitados, pero no impide el envío de dinero. Tengo la prueba de que algo de la plata ya nos fue entregada”.

Ese será el primer punto que en la UAR le plantearán a Lapasset e, incluso, los dirigentes argentinos tratarán de que el francés lo explique en extenso en la conferencia de prensa que dará el viernes y que marcará el fin de su misión en este país.

Preguntas: ¿Lapasset dirá algo distinto a lo que menciona el comunicado de la institución que él preside? ¿Los argentinos se encontrarán con otro panorama del que trajeron de la última asamblea que el IRB realizó en Dublin el 1º de mayo?

Por eso, el día clave será mañana. Allí, Lapasset se juntará con los presidentes de todas las Uniones, las mismas que no llegaron a un acuerdo para renovar los estatutos. Quizá de lo que salga de ese cónclave, el francés pueda emitir una opinión definitiva.

Antes de encontrarse con Lapasset, los titulares de las Uniones tendrán una reunión en la UAR, pactada a partir de las 13 y con la presencia de Carreras.
