En la fría tarde otoñal del 21 de octubre, paseando por París y aún con el alma tibia de emoción por la conquista del bronce en la Copa del Mundo, Agustín Pichot no ocultó sus sensaciones, íntimamente relacionadas con una decisión que le llevó casi nueve meses ratificar. "Mi corazón y mi alma me dicen que éste es el final", confesó ese día el Nº 9. La caída del telón mundialista decretó el cierre de un extenso ciclo, y el líder de aquella extraordinario campaña reconoció que no volvería a vestir la camiseta nacional, pero dejó abierta la posibilidad de una función de despedida. Ese "último partido" iba a ser el test-match del 9 de agosto próximo con los Springboks. Sin embargo, el capitán resolvió no participar de dicho compromiso, actitud que rubrica su retiro.

"Te lo dije apenas se acabó el Mundial, sabía que era lo último. Una parte de mí lo sabía, pero la otra no lo asumió hasta que no empecé a entrenarme. El lunes salí a correr y me di cuenta de que no estaba; me faltaba algo", admitió Agustín, luego de presentarse ante las cámaras de televisión para oficializar su renuncia (el anuncio lo hizo ayer al mediodía, en el noticiero SportsCenter de ESPN+). "Desgraciadamente no voy a estar con Sudáfrica. Después de lo poco que jugué en Racing (N. de la R.: estuvo en 17 de los 31 actos del certamen), después de hablarlo con mi mujer (Florencia) y de pensar qué es lo que realmente quiero, decidí que no voy a jugar. Fue una decisión difícil. No estoy bien física ni psicológicamente para afrontar este partido", especificó.

Como en un monólogo, profundizó en sus explicaciones: "Es verdad que había elegido jugar con Sudáfrica, y por eso Tati (Santiago Phelan, el entrenador argentino) me convocó, pero necesitaba pensar. Estaba con el impulso y el entusiasmo del Mundial y creía que podía, pero me di cuenta de que no estaba. No estoy al 100%, entonces no respetaría mi forma de encarar las cosas. Me parece una falta de respeto hacia la camiseta que tanto me dio. Jugar hubiera sido forzar un paso más. Los Pumas son mi equipo, y siento que siempre lo serán, pero no estoy para seguir jugando", agregó el ex medio-scrum de Racing-Métro 92, club parisiense en el que disputó su último encuentro el 21 de junio, en la final por el ascenso al Top 14, que perdió con Mont-de-Marsan (32-23).

Este paso al costado no paga la ilusión de una función de despedida formal. "Me encantaría jugar un último partido con mi gente, y si es en el CASI, mejor. Hay una posibilidad en junio de 2009, pero no sé si por el calendario se podrá hacer algo. Es más una fantasía mía", dijo.

Que no vuelva a transpirar la camiseta celeste y blanca no significa que el vínculo con el seleccionado se termine; incluso, conociendo su amistad con Phelan, es poco factible que eso suceda. "Estoy para lo que necesiten; para ayudar a entrenar a los medio-scrums, para analizar videos, para asistir a las reuniones para ver si nos aceptan en el Tri Nations... lo que sea. Sobre la importancia de contar con hombres de experiencia para medirse con los sudafricanos, Pichot comentó: "Creo que el equipo necesita de otros jugadores. Este es un nuevo ciclo y el seleccionado tiene que encontrar, como en su momento sucedió conmigo o con tantos otros, la gente que le de forma al nuevo equipo. No podés estar todo el tiempo pensando en los Pumas de 2007. Ya está, eso ya pasó. El Mundial generó mucha expectativa, y la gente tal vez no comprende que todo tiene un ciclo. Es un error estar lamentándose por los que no están; a nosotros nos demandó mucho tiempo llegar al nivel que tuvimos en el Mundial, y hay que ser pacientes durante esta transición", enfatizó.

Les Cusworth es un ex – jugador y entrenador del Leicester. Hace algunos años, este inglés de 54 años se radicó en la Argentina (vive en Hurlingham) y participó y participa activamente de las actividades del seleccionado nacional. - ¿Que opinión le merece la actuación del seleccionado en el último mundial?

- Los Pumas en el mundial de Francia llegaron tras un proceso de 6 años, y no de 6 meses. Donde hubo disciplina, respeto. También había una buena estructura con Loffreda y los otros entrenadores. Un grupo especial de jugadores fantásticos, con muchos “capitans” (sic) como Longo, Ledesma, Contepomi, Pichot. Era un grupo especial.

- ¿Los Pumas tienen nivel para jugar y vencer a los equipos del 3 Naciones?

- Para mi tanto Australia como Nueva Zelanda son muy fuertes. Pero en la copa del mundo los All-Blacks no funcionaron. Los fowards en el scrum y en line estuvieron más o menos. Y no estuvieron tan duros en su juego. Entonces, en mi opinión, Los Pumas contra los All-Blacks pueden controlar la pelota, controlan la posesión, y por ende: los puntos.

- ¿Cuáles son los valores que destaca del rugby?

- Lo que rescato del rugby es que es un juego de equipo, donde las individualidades no importan. Tiene que haber respeto y disciplina, y es un juego para todos jugado por amigos donde hay corazón y pasión. El rugby para mi es lo número uno.

- ¿Que opina del rugby argentino para el futuro?

- El rugby en Argentina es único en el mundo, es especial. Hay 82 equipos jugando en Buenos Aires. El futuro para la Argentina es increíble.

La UAR fue invitada a una reunión especial de la SANZAR

El representante del Consejo Directivo de la UAR, Ricardo García Fernández y Agustín Pichot, viajaron con destino a Wellington, Nueva Zelanda, para participar de un Taller de trabajo especial que realiza la SANZAR (Sudáfrica, Nueva Zelanda y Australia).

Argentina fue invitada junto a Canadá y Estados Unidos, y participará de distintos foros de discusión sobre intereses comunes, los cuales tendrán lugar los días 2 y 3 de julio, en la ciudad mencionada.

Entre los temas que se tratarán se destacan algunas presentaciones de los países invitados, como así también un taller de trabajo y una proyección departe de los miembros de la SANZAR , acerca del futuro de los Torneos de las Tres Naciones y el Súper 14.
