JOHANNESBURGO, Sudáfrica.- Una sonrisa simpática y radiante se distinguía en ese rostro moreno como el café, surcado por ceños de felicidad y encanto. A un lado, las pelotas de rugby dibujaban en el aire símbolos de unión y de amistad, advertidos con fascinación y asombro por una atmósfera espesa de historia, que supo de leyendas de lucha, resistencia y también de paz. Esa fue la mejor postal que regaló el deporte: decenas de niños maravillados por conocer y aprender de esos personajes atléticos y musculosos que ocasionalmente vieron por televisión o en los periódicos. Estuvieron allí diez jugadores de los Pumas y también aparecieron Bryan Habana, Percy Montgomery, Schalk Burger, entre otras cuantas figuras de los campeones del mundo. Sucedió en Soweto, un suburbio de Johannesburgo salpicado por lágrimas de dolor e injusticia, un sitio que fue uno de los focos más vigorosos en los que se gestó la lucha contra el apartheid.

Allí pasaron ayer el día algunos jugadores argentinos (faltaron los que serán pasado mañana titulares) y el plantel completo de los Springboks. Conjuntamente, ambos equipos regaron sus conocimientos rugbísticos por un terreno que se hizo fértil al mundo ovalado tras la abolición de la política de segregación racial y gracias a la ayuda de un hombre blanco, quien por entonces era el director del liceo técnico Jabulani. En 1994, y después de mucho trabajo, el entusiasmo y la solidaridad levantaron lo que es hoy Soweto Rugby Club, un predio pequeño, con dos canchas, y en donde casi a diario disfrutan unos 600 chicos, todos negros, de los placeres de correr detrás de una pelota.

Fue una clínica de rugby sin distinciones, con niños blancos y negros, todos unidos por la riqueza del aprendizaje y de la amistad. Las figuras mundiales les enseñaron principios del rugby, una disciplina que de a poco gana popularidad en Soweto (South Western Township), un suburbio que convive al borde del hacinamiento, con más de 3.500.000 habitantes y que, según los locales, "es un país dentro de Sudáfrica".

En el centro de la cancha principal, John Allan, un ex Springbok, dirigía los ejercicios mediante un altavoz. Cada jugador tenía a su cargo un grupo de diez chicos a los que les debía enseñar y luego exponer en público todo lo aprendido. Los pequeños que estuvieron bajo las órdenes de Esteban Lozada y el sudafricano Victor Matfield se ganaron la mayoría de los aplausos. Marcos Ayerza, pese a su excelente inglés, jamás pudo hacerse entender entre los niños, aunque la práctica le resultó agradable. "No importa, nos salieron algunas cosas mal, pero lo importante es que los chicos se divirtieron", dijo conforme el pilar argentino.

En medio de un clima de fiesta, a un costado, observaba en silencio Hugo Porta. El tuvo mucho que ver en la organización de este acontecimiento único (fue la primera visita oficial del seleccionado de Sudáfrica a Soweto). Pero su participación no se detiene únicamente con lo de ayer. La Fundación Laureus, de la que Porta es miembro, le está dando una mano a Soweto Rugby Club con un proyecto comunitario que se desarrolla por medio de ese deporte, "enseñando los valores para la vida, dando trabajo y sembrando semillas para que aquí existan muchos más clubes", según explicó el simpático Dali Ndebele, director del club.

"Es nuestro hogar. Crecimos tanto en los últimos años que queremos fundar más clubes alrededor de Soweto, para que todos tengamos nuestro lugar. La visita de los Pumas y la de Hugo Porta es importante y les enseña a los chicos, todos ellos de situación desfavorable, a incentivarlos a que si se esfuerzan algún día podrán llegar a ser como ellos", comentó Ndebele.

Un vaho de dulzura y serenidad se advertía en el atardecer. Los últimos rayos caían sesgados e iluminaban a un lugar que se abrió a la vida por el camino de la paz. Vivió allí el ex presidente Nelson Mandela y reside actualmente el arzobispo Desmond Tutu, ambos ganadores del Premio Nobel. Sus presencias se percibían en el aire, en esa brisa fresca que irradiaba placer. La jornada de enseñanza de rugby rayaba el final con el sol perdido entre colinas y quebradas, con un paisaje de sonrisas eternas que dejará su huella en la memoria de Soweto.

El lunes salí a correr y me di cuenta de que no estaba; me faltaba algo", admitió Agustín, luego de presentarse ante las cámaras de televisión para oficializar su renuncia (el anuncio lo hizo ayer al mediodía, en el noticiero SportsCenter de ESPN+). Les Cusworth es un ex – jugador y entrenador del Leicester. Hace algunos años, este inglés de 54 años se radicó en la Argentina (vive en Hurlingham) y participó y participa activamente de las actividades del seleccionado nacional. - ¿Que opinión le merece la actuación del seleccionado en el último mundial?

- Los Pumas en el mundial de Francia llegaron tras un proceso de 6 años, y no de 6 meses. Donde hubo disciplina, respeto. También había una buena estructura con Loffreda y los otros entrenadores. Un grupo especial de jugadores fantásticos, con muchos “capitans” (sic) como Longo, Ledesma, Contepomi, Pichot. Era un grupo especial.

- ¿Los Pumas tienen nivel para jugar y vencer a los equipos del 3 Naciones?

- Para mi tanto Australia como Nueva Zelanda son muy fuertes. Pero en la copa del mundo los All-Blacks no funcionaron. Los fowards en el scrum y en line estuvieron más o menos. Y no estuvieron tan duros en su juego. Entonces, en mi opinión, Los Pumas contra los All-Blacks pueden controlar la pelota, controlan la posesión, y por ende: los puntos.

- ¿Cuáles son los valores que destaca del rugby?

- Lo que rescato del rugby es que es un juego de equipo, donde las individualidades no importan. Tiene que haber respeto y disciplina, y es un juego para todos jugado por amigos donde hay corazón y pasión. El rugby para mi es lo número uno.

- ¿Que opina del rugby argentino para el futuro?

- El rugby en Argentina es único en el mundo, es especial. Hay 82 equipos jugando en Buenos Aires. El futuro para la Argentina es increíble.

La UAR fue invitada a una reunión especial de la SANZAR

El representante del Consejo Directivo de la UAR, Ricardo García Fernández y Agustín Pichot, viajaron con destino a Wellington, Nueva Zelanda, para participar de un Taller de trabajo especial que realiza la SANZAR (Sudáfrica, Nueva Zelanda y Australia).

Argentina fue invitada junto a Canadá y Estados Unidos, y participará de distintos foros de discusión sobre intereses comunes, los cuales tendrán lugar los días 2 y 3 de julio, en la ciudad mencionada.

Entre los temas que se tratarán se destacan algunas presentaciones de los países invitados, como así también un taller de trabajo y una proyección departe de los miembros de la SANZAR , acerca del futuro de los Torneos de las Tres Naciones y el Súper 14.

A Los Pumas también les pegó fuerte la perdida del rugbier Juan Cruz Migliore del Club Universitario de Buenos Aires (CUBA). El jugador de tan solo 20 años, falleció el sábado último luego de un golpe sufrido en un partido ante San Fernando. En apoyo a la familia del jugador el seleccionado argentino saldrá este sábado a la cancha frente a Italia con una cinta negra estampada en una de sus mangas.

A menos de siete días del accidente sufrido por el wing de CUBA, Migliore, la comunidad del rugby argentino continúa en un estado de shock tal que cuesta creer que el joven de 20 años no este más entre nosotros. Es por eso que el conjunto dirigido por Santiago Phelan y Fabián Turnes en un acto de solidaridad y apoyo a toda la familia del club Universitario, tuvo la gran idea de recordar a esta promesa del rugby argentino con un cinta negra en un costado de la camiseta la cual seguramente Juan Cruz alguna vez habrá soñado en tenerla puesta

Tanto buscó Argentina y tanto reconocimiento cosechó en el ámbito internacional que, al fin, Los Pumas fueron invitados a jugar el Tres Naciones desde el 2012. Pero, del dicho al hecho... Lógicamente, la Sanzar (Nueva Zelanda, Australia y Sudáfrica) pide que la Selección, mucho más taquillera desde el bronce mundialista, se presente con lo mejor, con los Hernández, Corleto, Albacete, Contepomi, la gran base que se desempeña en Europa. Pero, ¿cómo hacer para que ellos dejen sus clubes? ¿Decirles "vengan a jugar al país"? ¿Y la plata que cobran? Rugby profesional en la Argentina, imposible. ¿Entonces?

Entonces hay una idea. Que esos Pumas, como equipo, participen en torneos internacionales y, luego, disputen el Tres Naciones, que en realidad sería un Cinco Naciones (los tres de siempre, Los Pumas y un seleccionado del Pacífico que saldría de una clasificación). Claro que hay que conseguir el dinero como para que los jugadores (en Europa reciben 150.000 euros de promedio por temporada) acepten. Ese es otro tema -no menor- a resolver. El grupo que actúa en el país jugará competencias menores como la Churchill Cup.

La UAR tiene dos planes. El "1" es mandar el equipo al Super Rugby (actual Super 14), un certamen que se juega entre seleccionados provinciales de las tres potencias, al que buscan expandir y hacerlo más atractivo, como también al Tres Naciones. El problema es dónde afincar a Los Pumas. Nueva Zelanda y Australia no quieren que las fechas incluyan partidos en la Argentina. Una posibilidad es que los jugadores hagan base en Sudáfrica y que el torneo se divida en zonas: una para Australia y Nueva Zelanda y la otra en la tierra de Mandela. Ricardo García Fernández, dirigente de la UAR que viaja en la primera semana de julio a Nueva Zelanda, comentó que es "la más lógica y viable".

Claro que no tendría tanto apoyo de los jugadores, que pretenden permaneces en Europa. Por eso está el plan "2": que el equipo se sume a la Liga Celta (juegan galeses, irlandeses y escoceses), lo cual, según Richichi, "es políticamente más complicado". ¿Por qué lo prefieren los players? Así se haría base en Europa (¿España?), donde residen. Las cuestiones logísticas (dónde entrenar, cuándo juntarse) también son temas a resolver.

Originalmente, Los Pumas querían ir al Seis Naciones, con lo cual podrían seguir jugando en sus clubes de Europa, ya que la actividad local se interrumpe. Harían base en, por ejemplo, España durante un par de meses y listo. Pero desde el torneo se negaron. Así, quedó el Tres Naciones, pero con dificultades por cuestiones económicas, logísticas y organizativas a resolver... Por supuesto, algo es algo, aunque no será fácil encontrar los caminos para llegar a esta meta.

Una lesión en un tobillo lo sacó de los campos y se frustró su sueño de estar en el Mundial 2007.

Sin embargo, a los 33 años y trasplantado, el Gigante de Auckland no se siente fuera del rugby: "Amo el rugby y siempre lo amaré. Es mucho más que un juego; es un estilo de vida. Por eso, extraño jugar. Si por mi fuera, si tengo la oportunidad de jugar mañana, lo hago. No tengo ninguna limitación; me entreno sin problemas y hasta tengo más energía ahora. Lo único que me para es una decisión, no la operación", confesó esta mole de 1,96 m y más de 100 kg.

Su encantamiento por nuestro país se traslada al respeto por los Pumas y los méritos de éstos para ser parte de una competencia de elite: "La Argentina ha crecido mucho como equipo, se nota lo importante que es la influencia de los jugadores que están en Europa. Aquí todavía el rugby es amateur, pero tal vez si tuvieran esa oportunidad acá, no tendrían que irse. Igual, esa es una decisión difícil, y les corresponde a los que manejan el rugby. Para el desarrollo del rugby en el mundo, sería valiosa la llegada de un aire fresco, de un estilo de juego diferente. Creo que con la incorporación de los Pumas el profesionalismo elevaría su nivel".

No se sabe si otra vez correrá para esquivar tackles o atropellar adversarios, aunque convertirse en entrenador es una alternativa viable: "Sí, me veo como técnico. Es algo en lo que quisiera involucrarme. Tengo muchos conocimientos en mi cabeza que puedo transmitir, pero también, hay secretos que quiero guardar y no mostrárselos a nadie", expresó Lomu con una sonrisa, la mejor referencia para graficar lo que dejó su visita.

Un centenar de chicos participaron de la clínica que el ex All Black dio, junto con los Pumas Felipe Contepomi y Juan Fernández Lobbe, en San Isidro. Durante una hora, Lomu interactuó y derrochó simpatía; además, explicó el origen de la danza del Haka y la realizó. Como consejo para los chicos, transmitió: "Deben seguir su pasión, sea cual fuere. Si tienen el corazón y el deseo, pueden alcanzar sus objetivos".

Ahora, es Adidas Internacional la que está de por medio y, por esa razón, entre otras cosas, hoy estuvo presente en la rúbrica del convenio el neocelandés Jonah Lomu, embajador rugbístico de las tres tiras.

De la conferencia, realizada este mediodía en un hotel de la zona de Retiro, participaron además Porfirio Carreras, presidente de la UAR; Alejandro Cubelli, encargado del sector de marketing de la entidad y el brasileño Rodrigo Mesías, gerente de marketing de Adidas Argentina.

“Tener como sponsor principal a una empresa a nivel mundial como Adidas sin dudas nos ayudará a esta tarea que tenemos de insertar a Los Pumas en una competencia regular”, sostuvo Carreras, aunque admitió que el contrato está reñido sólo a la cuestión de la indumentaria.

A nivel seleccionados nacionales, Adidas tiene uno de sus fuertes en los All Blacks, en los que según distintas versiones invertiría 20 millones de dólares. Se estima que el contrato con la UAR no alcanzará esas cifras, aunque una fuente le indicó a este blog que “es muy importante”.

También pudo saberse que los contratos renovados por la UAR con sus sponsors luego del Mundial subieron su cotización a más del doble que antes de Francia 2007 y que en algunos casos se triplicaron.

Visa, main sponsor y que luce su publicidad en la camiseta, fue la única empresa que renovó su vínculo con la UAR antes del Mundial.

Lomu, quien llegó el domingo a la Argentina y que mañana participará de una clínica con 50 chicos que organizará Adidas en el SIC junto a los Pumas Felipe Contepomi y Juan Fernández Lobbe, enfatizó por otra parte que lo más lógico sería que el seleccionado argentino se acople a un hipotético Siete Naciones, aunque agregó que por su estilo de juego le daría “nuevos aires” al Tres Naciones.

El contrato con Adidas concluirá una vez finalizado el Mundial de Nueva Zelanda 2011.

La semana pasada, la UAR firmó otro contrato con un nuevo sponsor, el banco sudafricano Standard Bank. Y siguen como patrocinadores Gatorade, Peugeot, Quilmes, Medicus y ESPN.

Cusworth es un especialista en el análisis de videos de los partidos de rugby, colaboró mucho con Los Pumas en el último mundial realizado en Francia, la finalidad de este centro es perfeccionar la infraestructura y la formación de los jugadores, principalmente en las provincias.

“Habrá cinco centros regionales en Argentina, estos se encontrarán en Buenos Aires, Rosario, Tucumán, Córdoba y Mendoza. El primer paso es encontrar un Director para el Centro, será designado mediante una selección, los interesados presentarán sus currículum, se harán anuncios en Mendoza y en la web de la UAR, en los próximos tres meses tenemos que tenerlo designado. Será abierto y transparente. Se necesitará a gente que colabore, que proteja a los clubes, al espíritu amateur.” comentó
